The journey of ECD Connect has involved extensive collaboration with various organisations and sector specialists and includes bespoke platforms developed for two key players in the South African ECD ecosystem. The ECD Connect team continues to play an active role in these projects.
Grow Great Champions are community healthcare workers (CHWs) who conduct home visits with pregnant women, new mothers, and young children to make sure that they’re supported to stay healthy and that any problems are identified early.
CHW Connect has been developed to support Grow Great Champions and their team leads, as well as provide critical, near real-time insights for head office. It includes a progressive web app, an admin portal, and a data dashboard.

This in-app, Moodle-based learner management system gives users a way to learn something new, refresh old skills, and see their expertise blossom
As of August 2025, there are 342 CHWs registered on the CHW Connect, 1 933 pregnant clients, and 9 412 child clients. From the launch of CHW Connect in April 2024 to mid-August 2025, CHWs have completed 57 055 visits with child clients and 6 741 visits with pregnant clients.
Funda App
SmartStart is a social franchise with a bold ambition: to ensure every young child has access to a quality early learning programme in preparation for the opportunities ahead. Funda App has been developed to support practitioners, principals, and coaches in the SmartStart programme.
